You can't make a purple or gold item. Those are dropped from monsters or chests. Adding a blue mod to a gold weapon will not change the gold item to blue either.

"Gold" weapons have to be found.
I order of rarity you have: White (Common) > Blue (Magical) > Purple (Uncommon) > Gold (Rare) > Green (Unique Boss Weapons) You weapon has remained blue because you found or obtained it as a Blue (Magical). The mods will do nothing to the text description. [EDIT] As for Greens, they are not always superior to Golds. In fact you could probably piece together a "replica" |

Upgrades are always blue text. When you add them to an item, the text becomes the text color of the weapon itself. So if you add a 5/-1 vampiric string and a +30 hp grip of fortitude (both upgrades are in blue text) to a gold Platinum bow. When you hover over the platium bow, in gold, it will be titled "Vampiric Platinum Bow of Fortitude"
The same thing with other colored items. If you get a weapon from a crafter or collector (always blue but perfect stats for their level) and add perfect mods, the weapon will show blue, despite being perfect. |

"Perfect" have nothing to do with the color really, since you can mod a collectors weapon to have same stats as another.
Though the weapons you see are gold colored, which indicate that they are rare. Weapons with blue text are "common" Weapons with purple text are "uncommon" Weapons with gold/yellow text are "rare" You can't change the color of your weapon, they drop wtih it. hope this helped. |

Note that there is no difference between a blue and gold of the same qualities, it is just a vanity thing that drives up the price.
You can get perfect clean weapons from collectors or crafters and add your own upgrades to them. Note that collector weapons cannot be salvaged though so any upgrades you put on them you cannot get back. |

I thought it was the rarity of the qualities that determined whether the weapon was rare, uncommon, or common. In other words, gold weps have perfect or near-perfect mods; purple weps have lower quality mods; and so on.

Yes but you gotta use a sup salvage kit. There is a small chance you get material, but generally you will salvage ONE of the 2 mods.

Chances are you'll get one mod back or, even worse, crafting materials.

A chaos axe is not a collector weapon. You cannot salvage a collector weapon, which is what you get when you trade a collector monster parts:
